Some films we've seen.
We watch at least one a week.
Occasionally we attempt humour in comic form.

THE WRESTLER
20/01/2009
Wrestling, the WWF/WWE variety, may be scripted and staged but it doesn’t mean it isn’t real. It’s entertaining, dramatic, humourous and violent, but it’s also very human. Admittedly I love wrestling. A love reinforced by The Wrestler.

MOVIES 160 (CLOSING NIGHT)
26/12/2008
Movies is a weekly gathering of film goers that have been meeting for over 3 years (160 movies to be exact). To commemorate the departure of the founder of Movies, a few of us endeavoured to host an appropriate, Closing Night.

MY SASSY GIRL · 엽기적인그녀
14/11/2008
Some things take you by surprise. Sure, I’d heard about My Sassy Girl before – it’s South Korea’s highest-grossing comedy of all time, and if ever there was a Korean movie that non-Koreans I spoke to knew something about, this would be it. So, having been released in 2001, why did it take me all of seven years to finally catch up with it? I’m not sure. The important thing is that I did, and it took me by surprise.

TROPIC THUNDER
25/08/2008

A smart, sharp and self-aware Hollywood comedy that’s hilarious for its entire duration. A keen awareness of Hollywood culture is a must and is directly related to how much you’ll enjoy this film. Its greatest achievement – jokes that you haven’t heard or seen before.

THE HAPPENING
28/06/2008

A b-grade metaphorical cautionary tale delivered awkwardly, though intentionally so. The Happening is suspenseful and M. Night Shyamalan knows what he’s doing but it doesn’t leave the right impression. I’d rather a Thing or a Triffid any day…
Also known as The Green Effect (working title) and Green Planet (working title), here’s a spoiler, if it wasn’t obvious already, there is no twist. Expect nothing and you might come out with something.

SPEED RACER
15/06/2008

Speed Racer is a relentless impressionistic hyper colour extravaganza, unabated in its vision and visual flare. It is unique and must be seen in a cinema. If you love film, you owe it to yourself to see Speed Racer, though be aware that it may not be an enjoyable experience…

THE WARLORDS (TAU MING CHONG)
8/06/2008
Click To View Comic Inspired By…
A typical Chinese historical war epic about 3 blood brothers as they stumble towards their demise. A standard rise, divide and fall tale without believable motivations. There is a sense that Jet Li, Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro are giving it their all but the whole just doesn’t come together.

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL
25/05/2008

Swinging with the monkeys was a great ‘leap’ too far. We have every right to feel sharked. We waited nearly 20 years for this… Sure the spirit was intact, the acting fair, and the near-final scene did look impressive (a firm nod to the Mummy series), but there’s nowhere left to go. Is this the end for Indiana Jones? Most likely, and guess who we have to thank?

A film so effective in its execution it is a masterpiece.
I thought it would be a film about the thrills of gambling and beating the system. It wasn’t. I thought it would provide an insight into how card counting worked. It doesn’t. I thought it would explore greed, ego and morality. It didn’t. I was clearly mistaken in my initial assumptions. It is in fact so much more.

UNTRACEABLE UNDEFEATABLE DUNGEON
11/05/2008
Click To View Comic Inspired By…
Some of us enjoy really bad movies. So much so that we seek them out. We do it because it verifies why some movies are great, but more often than not, we do it for the humour and all the unintentionally ridiculous moments they provide. This week was an ode to this under-appreciated sub-genre of Comedy.

IRON MAN
4/05/2008

An excellent example of how popular comic franchise films can and in cases should be made. A film which stands on its own rather than riding on the enthusiasm of its fan base. When all the pieces fit together, it shows – acting, writing, direction, special effects… it should be held up as an example. And there’s more to come.

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL
26/04/2008

Another hilarious and crude film with a big heart. These prolific bunch of actors / writers / directors / producers have something special going on. The Romantic Comedy genre has never been better…
40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad, and now Forgetting Sarah Marshall… perhaps Pineapple Express is next?

An excellent film that lingers. A tragedy with a silver lining. So truthfully human, only a Comedy this week will suffice.

BE KIND REWIND

Just to kick this off in the right direction…
An attempt to review a recently patronised movie in comic form. Enjoy!

Never fear, you need not add the app to view the comic. As long as you’re logged into Facebook it’ll do.
And by posting it here, it eases the nagging desire to implement comic commenting in the app. Hooray!
